About Mulgrave Road

OUR FOCUS ON THE CREATION, DEVELOPMENT AND PRESENTATION OF NEW WORK

Mulgrave Road Theatre has earned a national reputation for producing important plays that resonate not just within our community, but much further afield. For visiting playwrights, our home base in Guysborough, Nova Scotia provides a welcome haven from the distractions of an urban centre – and an opportunity to focus on their work.

The strength of Mulgrave Road Theatre lies in our ability to support the natural evolution and expansion of artistic expression. Mulgrave Road’s mandate is to create, develop and produce original professional works of theatre.

The creation component of our mandate is realized through our Writers-In-Residence Program. Each participant in the program must have a script idea that is strongly connected to the Atlantic Canadian experience. We support the writer with two or three weeks accommodation in Guysborough, studio space with a computer, a public reading of their work and remuneration as they realize their first draft or revise a previous one. Alternately, the Artistic Director may commission a playwright to write a script that deals with a specific issue or theme.

The development section takes the form of readings or workshops. A workshop gives the writer a chance to hear the play read by professional actors, and provides the opportunity to make changes to the script based on the need for clarity, interpretation and sense of direction. Plays considered for development include drafts from our Writers-In-Residence Program, commissioned works, and solicited scripts.

Presentation of new works takes place when the script is ready to go into production. When producing a new play, Mulgrave Road offers full technical, design and publicity support, recognized professional directors and actors, and when appropriate, a composer to create an original musical score.
